The Mahi, or 'fish', pattern has been woven in Tabriz since the sixteenth century. Each knot is still tied on a vertical loom, worked from a cartoon drawn by hand rather than printed.

This piece is woven at approx. 300 knots per square inch, which works out at approx. 995,195 knots in total — every one tied by hand, over approx. 10 months.
How that is worked out: 69 in × 48 in × 300 knots per sq. in. ≈ 995,195 — that is 174 × 123 cm converted to inches, because knot density is counted per square inch.
Magnify past 13× and the field stops being a picture and becomes what it actually is: rows of individual knots, each one a decision about colour made at a particular moment.
